Matt and Brian, a couple of really good friends of mine decided to head up to my place for the weekend and get out and do a bit of hiking. They sort of left the destination up to me and had the evening before pointed out a hollow to me that they had hiked to six years prior in the winter.
They mentioned that last time they were there they made the comment that they would need to come back out and see it in the spring time.
Not really knowing where to go, it's a bit overwhelming with so much to do in the area, I decided to drag them back to Bearcat Falls.
The area is really nice and one that Matt and I have been to before. Punchbowl Falls is in the hollow opposite the road and down the Ozark Highlands Trail towards the west. Bearcat falls is somewhat close to the OHT to the east from the same trailhead.
We opted to Park at Kettle Corn Road and hike the road all the way out adjacent to the hollow and then made our way, practically bushwhacking most of the way, to the top of Bearcat Falls.
Once there, we made our way around the top of the hollow, finding a neat overlook and then descended down into and back up to Bearcat falls. We spent about an hour here and then made our way back.
At the top of the waterfall, the trail becomes very difficult to locate in the Spring/Summer, so we did our best following it until it became lost and then we used GPS to navigate through the thick woods.
I'd definitely recommend being familiar with GPS on this trip. We utilize Gaia for our hiking.
